Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day
ELECTRIFIED: THE GUITAR REVOLUTION
SCREENING AT THE ST. GEORGE ART MUSEUM ON
SEPTEMBER 25TH THROUGHOUT THE DAY AS PART OF
SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE’S MUSEUM DAY
Smithsonian Channel and THE ST. GEORGE ART MUSEUM Recall the Invention of the Instrument that Changed the Look, Sound and Volume of Music Forever
St. George, UT – Sept 25, 2010 – Smithsonian Channel and Smithsonian Magazine present a special screening of the critically acclaimed documentary, ELECTRIFIED: THE GUITAR REVOLUTION at St. George Art Museum on September 25, 2010 .
Without it, there would be no Hendrix, Clapton, The Beatles or rock n’ roll for that matter. This 60 minute high-wattage history lesson salutes the inventors, pioneers and gods of the electric guitar. The electric guitar was invented to be heard among the brass instruments of the big band era, but it soon took on a sound and life of its own. How did this assemblage of wood, wire and metal go on to ignite a new era of music, transform background musicians into guitar heroes and become a symbol of freedom and rebellion? From the early days of the Model U and the Frying Pan to the guitar wars of Fender and Gibson, experience its evolution through vintage footage, interviews with rock historians and rousing live performances. Virtuosos like G.E. Smith of the Saturday Night Live Band go through the decades of sound innovations of the electric guitar.
ELECTRIFIED: THE GUITAR REVOLUTION is screening at the The St. George Art Museum on September 25, 2010 starting at 10:00 a.m. for information call 435.627.4525, E-mail

Plein Air at Snow Canyon – June Meeting
The Plein Air at snow canyon was a success. We had a good turnout and we enjoyed a beautiful evening at snow canyon. Many brought their easels and some sketch pads and we sat in the shade and painted and drew the setting shadows of that beautiful canyon. We were pleased to have Roland Lee with us and he offered some advice (from his vast experience) on the process of capturing the moment. Many suggested we, the VAA, should arrange more Plein Air events. We heartily agree. We look forward to scheduling more of these events.
Johannes Michalski Presentation
We had a fantastically interesting meeting on April 14th. Our special guest was Johannes Michalski, a “mouth painter”. Mr. Michalski is originally from Belgium, where as a boy, he suffered an accident which resulted in the loss of both arms. Despite this setback, he showed promise as an artist and was admitted to the Royal Academy of Beaux Arts there in Belgium- the only handicapped student there at the time. He caught the attention of the “Mouth and Foot Painters”, an international organization which promotes and aids disabled artists, providing them with a dignified means of making a living, contributing to society, and expressing themselves through art. Mr. Michalski came to the U.S. in 1981 and now lives in St. George.
Mr. Michalski brought many of his paintings for display, and from looking at them, one would never know that they had been painted by mouth. I am constantly amazed what the human spirit can achieve. We were also treated to a video spotlighting the Mouth and Foot Painters. There are currently over 500 of these artists internationally working and supporting themselves with their art.
One extra positive event occurred at Mr. Michalski’s presentation:
The granddaughter of Glenn Martin, one of our members, is in high school and does not have the use of her arms and legs. Glenn and his friend Debbie Lewis, aware of this impending lecture, and with the encouragement of this young girl’s high school art teacher, brought her to this event, for she has shown some real promise in drawing. She and her family got the chance to talk with Mr. Michalski and he made the promise to speak to the “Mouth and Foot Painters Association” on her behalf. She has a long difficult road ahead of her, but now she has a real dream to look forward to achieving.

Robert Park Presentation
We had a fabulous presentation on March 10, 2010 by Robert Park. He is a talented local photographer and he prints many artists’ giclées. I believe that each and every one of us in attendance learned something new about the giclée process and its market in the world of art sales. Thank you, Bob, for taking the time!!
Bringing in a New Year/New Decade!
We had a fantastic turnout for our New Year/New Decade soirée! While we enjoyed great food we were introduced to some featured artists: Ernest Hill, Paul Jensen, Aimee Bonham and Dorothy Kennedy. They brought some samples of their art and we were duly impressed and inspired! After dinner we had some fun playing “Art Bingo” where a handful of lucky guests won prizes! Thanks to all who helped make it such a successful evening!
2009 Jubilee of Trees/Santa’s Workshop
I know this is coming out way late, but better late than never, right?
Did you ever think that art could save lives? Think about it. In what way could that possibly be true? Well, indirectly it can and does! This past Jubilee of Trees and Santa’s Workshop is a great case to illustrate this! Here is how it worked:
Artists, many from our association, gave of their own time, putting in hours and hours helping Rosalie Scholes, the organizer, to paint and decorate this immense display. You can see from the photos where artists painted faux stones around doors and windows as well as images depicting Santa’s elves busy at work.
The finished workshop was set up in the Dixie Center where it attracted thousands of visitors who bought tickets for admittance as well as crafts and goodies for sale.
The proceeds from this event went toward the purchase of a Life Flight helicopter for the Dixie Regional Medical Center!
See how it works? For those artists who so kindly pitched in, I want you to remind yourselves that, thanks to you, that helicopter is becoming a reality!! Don’t let anyone try to tell you that art is not vital!
“Art Talk” at the Sears Gallery
This month I was able to attend the Art Talk at the Sears Gallery, which featured Pamala Bird and her bas-relief paper sculptures, and Ernesto Perez with his wonderful photographs. Kathy Cieslewicz does such a fabulous job getting these events organized; in fact, this one was so successfully attended that Kathy was scurrying to dig up extra chairs!
- Kathy C. doing her thing!
- Ernesto Perez discussing photography.
- Pamala Bird sharing her techniques.
Music and Art to Remember the Holocaust

John Lubs with some of his Holocause images.
Our own John Lubs was asked to paint depictions of these events, which he did in a brilliant, stark and emotive way. He says he did them in a week- what a feat!
Call for volunteers…
We want a few available artists to work with Jodi McGregor doing some fun painting for the “Jubilee of Trees”! Just a couple afternoons of your time and you’ll have a great experience. Send a note if you are interested- we have a month! (Deadline is Nov. 16)
